A vaccination plan ensures your canine companion remains protected against dangerous diseases.
A Vaccine Risk Assessment is performed at the same time as the annual physical exam. This assessment is used to determine the necessity of vaccinating your canine adult friend. Exposure (pet travels; local exposure to multiple animals of the same species), immune issues, and vaccine history are key factors in the assessment. A vaccine program can help prevent certain illnesses that can affect your dog and contribute to a healthy life.
Our Veterinarians at Fairview Animal Hospital have assessed the risks that are prevalent in our area and can provide a set of core vaccines to help your canine friend live a long and healthy life. These core vaccines are recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Canine Vaccine Task Force. Fairview Animal Hospital is also an accredited member of AAHA.
The core vaccines we offer are Canine distemper virus, parvovirus, adenovirus-2 and parainfluenza, Rabies, and Bordetella Bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough).
We also vaccinate and are happy to discuss the non-core vaccines, Lyme vaccine, and Leptospirosis vaccine. Both Lyme and Lepto infections are seen in our area. Vaccination is based on a risk assessment of each dog.
We recommend your adult canine friend have a Vaccine risk assessment done annually by our Veterinarians. Recommendations are made to vaccinate every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine risk assessment and the type of vaccine.
There is no evidence that annual vaccine risk assessments that lead to vaccination are anything but beneficial to the majority of dogs. Published research has conclusively shown that neglecting your dog from vaccinating against some of the major diseases can put your pet at risk. In most adequately vaccinated dogs, the immunity should last more than a year and often several years. However, immunity declines with time and varies with dogs. To maintain successful immunity, and therefore good health, revaccination is recommended.
