What is pet euthanasia and how do I know when it’s the right time?

Euthanasia is a humane way to allow our pets to pass away without suffering. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AAHA) explains the following;

“If your pet can no longer experience the things he/she once enjoyed, cannot respond to you in his or her usual ways, or appears to be experiencing more pain than pleasure, you may need to consider euthanasia. Likewise, if your pet is terminally ill or critically injured, or if the financial or emotional cost of treatment is beyond your means, euthanasia may be a valid option. Sometimes asking yourself the question, “Does my pet have more bad days than good days?” can help you make the decision.”

How is the euthanasia drug administered?

An intravenous catheter is placed in the vein. If needed, we will give intramuscular sedation before the IV catheter placement to reduce the stress on your pet. Humane euthanasia is performed by the administration of a highly concentrated, and very closely regulated, anesthetic agent into the catheter. Your pet will peacefully fall sleep and within moments will pass away. We are sure to discuss the entire procedure ahead of time, so the owners know what to expect. It’s important to know that your pet won’t experience any pain.
